Summary

Wichrowe wzgórza, arcydzieło literatury światowej autorstwa Emily Brontë, które niezmiennie porusza i zachwyca czytelników。

Wichrowe wzgórza to jedyna powieść, którą napisała Emily Brontë。 Po raz pierwszy wydana została w 1847 roku。 Od pierwszego wydania w XIX wieku minęły więc niemal dwa stulecia, a dziwne losy bohaterów opisanych w Wichrowych Wzgórzach wciąż wzruszają do łez。

Book was not enjoyable, but that was the point。 Audiobook was not the way to go with this one, as much of the narrative is told second- and third-hand, and the characters all have similar names。 Will probably reread in physical in a few years。

When starting this novel I was expecting to read about a love story, as people were referring it to be, but it was far from one。 Yes - in the begging it revolves around Heathcliff and Catherine falling in love, and how their relationship affects the lives of the people close to them, but their quote-unquote "love story" is really only a small section of the novel。 Which in my opinion makes it unfair to call it that when there's way more to the storyline。 Wuthering Heights is a dark and brutal When starting this novel I was expecting to read about a love story, as people were referring it to be, but it was far from one。 Yes - in the begging it revolves around Heathcliff and Catherine falling in love, and how their relationship affects the lives of the people close to them, but their quote-unquote "love story" is really only a small section of the novel。 Which in my opinion makes it unfair to call it that when there's way more to the storyline。 Wuthering Heights is a dark and brutal story that takes place in 1771 about the lives of two families; the Earnshaws, the estate at Wuthering Heights, and the Lintons, the estate at Thrushcross Grange, living no longer than a few miles from one another。 It starts off with the family Earnshaw adopting a young orphan - Heathcliff, which later causes difficulty between him and Mr。 Earnshaw's son Hindley。 When Hindley becomes master after the fathers death, he treats Heathcliff inhuman with humiliation and abuse。 Over the years he then develops a friendship with Catherine and they get an attachment。 But when Heathcliff finds out that Catherine is going to marry Edgar Linton because with him it would appear shameful, he runs away to then come back three years later, rich and obsessed with revenge for all his injustice。 From this point and on Heathcliff's character grow monstrous and cruel, and throughout the novel it shows just how wicked he can get。Towards the end Bronte chose to end Heathcliff's plan for vengeance and decides to shift focus on Catherine's daughter growing up, as she gets to know her cousins whom she aren't allowed to see because of her father's and Heathcliff's history together。There's so much vicious in this book and Emily Bronte does such an excellent job writing the characters and human's emotions。 It really is impressive the way she shows how severe a human being is capable of turning out when ill-treated, along with all the violence she was able to write as well。 The process of reading this book can feel so disturbing that it's kind of like a personal test if you are willing to keep going or not, while you also have to know what is coming。The beautiful writing style and themes about humanity, complications, class, love and desperation was very engaging, and despite all it's violence I did enjoy the read a lot。 It's not perfect, but in the end I found the read appealing。 I had a hard time rating this book - if I were to go for 4 or 5 stars。 So I guess it would be fair to give it 4。5 。。。more

I've been wanting to re-read this for many years。 And it's great on so many different levels (but obviously a very dark book)。 It drags a bit in the middle, but it's something everyone should read。 I think it does a better job of capturing Romanticism than Frankenstein。 I also hadn't realized when I first read it that Nelly is a unreliable narrator。 I've been wanting to re-read this for many years。 And it's great on so many different levels (but obviously a very dark book)。 It drags a bit in the middle, but it's something everyone should read。 I think it does a better job of capturing Romanticism than Frankenstein。 I also hadn't realized when I first read it that Nelly is a unreliable narrator。 。。。more

Emily Brontë has moved her way onto my favorite authors list。 This book is so captivating I couldn’t put it down。 I love the realness of all the characters。 No character being stereotypical good or bad。 I’m honestly in awe with the entire story。 So many hard hitting quotes and it’s all organized so well and ughhh just read it

it has been so long since a book (especially a classic- i generally slough through them) has kept me up at night compelling me to complete it before even considering the possibility of sleeping。 i loved the story of catherine and heathcliff, i will not preach about the morality of the characters or their stories- it seems inconsequential in the face of their all encompassing love for eachother。 and i think that is really the essence of this story。 i will not pronounce this to be the greatest lov it has been so long since a book (especially a classic- i generally slough through them) has kept me up at night compelling me to complete it before even considering the possibility of sleeping。 i loved the story of catherine and heathcliff, i will not preach about the morality of the characters or their stories- it seems inconsequential in the face of their all encompassing love for eachother。 and i think that is really the essence of this story。 i will not pronounce this to be the greatest love story ever, no。 how could it be? with all the toxic portrayals from every character we’ve been introduced to。 but it does seem real (surprisingly enough)- with real characters, suffering through real struggles。 child abuse is a recurring theme。 along with portrayal of vain, narcissistic characters that would’ve had no chance of redemption (or even being understood, for that matter) if their psyche wasn’t so deeply delved into。 and no。 heathcliff is by no means the best fictional man, in fact he couldn’t be father from it。 a truly complex portrayal of a man who could never be fully understood。 he had no redemption arc (except a teeny bit for being vaguely nice to hareton) and was a truly appalling asshole until the last 30 pages before which he chilled out。 all the prose of them preaching their love for each other is so so riveting that i’ve underlined paragraphs in my copy。 also why is the writing so good? for a novel that is nearly two centuries old, why did the description of childhood (in the beginning that lasted for 2-3 pages) gut me so bad and give me a serious case of nostalgia- only paralleled by the childhood portrayal in never let me go by kazuo ishiguro。 all in all one of the best classic i’ve read- i’d have read it sooner if not for bella swan annoying me with all the constant references in new moon。 。。。more

Some visitor< Mr。 Lockwood, comes and she’s Cathy and is entranced by her, and the whole story is told to him by Nelly the servant。 I think in the end he, marries Cathy。 Idk。 What I hated immediately about this book besides my utter confusion, It was the worst communication, total manipulation, refusing to say I love you, let’s get married。 The main characters just couldn’t be honest about how they felt。 I think this is reprehensible to have such a role model available to people today。 This book should be banned, not just because of the poor role modeling but just because it is awful to read。 Perhaps the book would have been better, if I wasn’t under the impression that it was a love story。 The whole book is depressing, will likely make you depressed, the moors are just two huge houses where a bunch of dysfunctional people live。 Read it at your own risk, you have been forewarned。1That is my two cents, I am entitled to it。 You don’t have to agree。 My brain is fried, but everyone in a while, I need a challenge to muddle through to make me feel like I can accomplish something, so after 2。5 months, this book now qualifies。 Yay me!Favorite Quote from the book, “ ALL SINNERS WOULD BE MISERABLE IN HEAVEN”Second favorite quote: “You’ll neither see nor hear anything to frighten you if you refrain from prying” 。。。more
